Class of 2001 Alum David Garza Jr. was a tri-sport athlete at St. Bonaventure but made his biggest impact on the gridiron. As a freshman David was the starting linebacker on a JV football team that went 10-0 and won the Tri Valley League championship. He was moved up to Varsity for the play-offs . He was also a member of the Freshman Basketball team and was the starting shortstop on the JV baseball team.
As a Sophomore, David started at linebacker for the varsity football team helping them win a Tri Valley League title. He was voted to the All-TVL and All Ventura County teams for his play. He was a member of the JV Basketball team and as in football, he moved up to the varsity in Baseball starting at 2nd base on a team that advanced to the CIF-SS Semi-finals.
As a Junior, David once again started at linebacker and once again led the team to another TVL title. He also stepped it up a bit, the Seraphs went 14-0 and won the 3rd CIF-SS title in school history. He was named TVL Defensive Player of the Year and Ventura County Defensive Back of the Year. He was also selected All-CIFSS and to the LA Times All Ventura County team. In the CIF championship game against Nordhoff he scored the winning touchdown in the final minute of the game from the running back position! He once again started at 2nd Base for the Baseball team and once again led them to the CIF Semi-finals and a TVL championship.
As a Senior, David led the Seraphs to their second consecutive undefeated 14-0 season as they repeated as TVL and CIF Champions. He also repeated as TVL Defensive Player of the Year and Ventura County Defensive Back of the Year. He also repeated on the All-CIF and All LA Times teams. The Ventura County Star named him Utility Player of the Year. He led the team in tackles for 2nd year in a row and was named St. Bonaventure Gatorade Player of the Year as well as team captain. David was chosen to play in the Ventura County All-Star game to cap off his high school football career. In baseball he helped lead the Seraphs to their 4th straight CIF-SS semi-final appearance while being named to All TVL and All Ventura County teams. He capped off his high school baseball career as he did his football one by participating in the Ventura County All-Star game becoming one of the few who played in both All-Star games as a senior.
After SB, David attended Fresno State University and walked onto the football team during the 2001 season. In 2003, he transferred to Cal Lutheran University and played on Special Teams while starting 3 games at Linebacker. In 2004, he earned the starting job at linebacker and led the team in tackles. He earned 1st team All SCIAC. His biggest thrill during the season was recovering and fumble and returning it 52 yards for a touchdown in helping the Kingsmen defeat Redlands at Redlands for the first time in 18 years. In his senior year of 2005, he was named team captain and led the team in tackles. He also intercepted three passes from his linebacker position returning one for a TD. He was once again named 1st team All SCIAC and NCAA Division III All West Region. He was also named CLU’s Defensive Most Valuable Player. In 2009, David was selected to Cal Lutheran’s All Decade football team (2000-2010) as a linebacker, one of only 3 so honored.
He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and proudly serves our community as a peace officer.
